The cloth trade was very important in the East of England in Medieval times. In the 13th century, Colchester had a small but growing share in the trade and was known for the production of russel, a middle quality grey or brown cloth. This declined until in 1565 a large influx of Dutch weavers again established Clochester as a centre for manufacturing draperies. Picture taken at Colchester Castle Museum June 2007.
