Goals were dark usually filthy places where people were held prior to trial and sentence and not as a punishment in themselves. Most subsequent punishments were held in public view. This is Colchester Castle Gaol. Many of the people held on witchcraft charges in Colchester were held here prior to hanging. Picture taken June 2007.
