These were the medieval equivalents of modern chemists. However they also made and invented their own medicines from natural ingredients. Plants and herbs were used both as food and for medicinal purposes. Apothecaries grew many of those they needed as well as importing exotic spices. Medical knowledge helped them diagnose illnesses and carry out operations on those who could not afford a doctor. The shops were full of strange preserved animals and strong spices. There was a sign above the door so the shops could be easily recognised.
