Master General's barge approaching the Tower of London about 1770 (artists impression). From 1642 onwards the General of the Ordinance and officers of the board has a barge which they could use to undertake visits of inspection and attend ceremonial functions. In June 1707 a new barge was commissioned that was very richly ornate and 45ft long, this was still in use in the Georgian period.
