The huge fire place dates from the 15th century, when the building was an open hall. In Cromwell's time all the work of the kitchen centred around the fire that had to be kept burning. Meat was boiled or roasted, bread baked in the oven set in the chimney. Water for cooking had to be fetched from the well outside.
