These two towers mark the entrance to Cannon Street Station for trains as they come across the bridge over the River Thames. Until the outbreak of World War II between these two towers was a great glass domed roof but it was taken down for fear of it being destroyed by enemy bombs. It was dismantled piece by piece and stored in a large warehouse downstream, outside the centre of London. As luck would have it the area around the station never took a direct hit but the warehouse storing the roof was destroyed by German bombs, and the glass roof with it.
