The cathedral is built from stone quarried in Northamptonshire, with decorations in Purbeck Marble and local clunch. The building is cross-shaped, with the altar at the east end. The nave over 75 m long. A painted wooden ceiling was added to the nave under restoration work in 1839, overseen by George Peacock, with the architect George Gilbert Scott.
