This 15th century gatehouse is virtually all that survives of the Benedictine Abbey of Sr John founded in 1096 by an official of the Norman court of King William Rufus. It was supressed on the orders of King Hnery VIII. the facade once looked out onto the medieval town of Colchester. It is decorated in knapped flint flushwork. Picture taken May 2007.
