On 27th July 1645, 36 women from the Manningtree area were accused of witchcraft. They had been in gaol since early March. Rebecca West was one interrogated by Hopkins, she was just 15 years old. Her interrogation was vital as it was the first to lead to trial. Rebecca escaped death by turning King's evidence and named a number of other women as witches including her mother, Anne West, who was amongst those hung.
