This column was designed and made by John Makepeace in Great Britain in 1978 of plied birch and coloured acrylic, cantilevered from a stainless steel column. It combines contemporary forms with utilitarian aims with traditional skills. He thought that artistic form and content should not override use and finish. The sculptured quality is inherent in its use and function and not an end in itself. Picture taken at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
