When the Upper Library was first opened in 1628 this would have been the view that people saw when they entered through the big wooden door at the far end of the gallery. The spiral staircase would not have existed. That was added in 1858. The window at the end would have been mostly clear glass and there would not have been any cases in the centre of the aisle. Imagine how much bigger and brighter it would have looked.
