St Peters-on-the-wall is a Saxon chapel built by St Cedd in 654 AD. He used the stones of the nearby old Roman fort, Othona. Cedd was a monk and priest at Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland. He sailed down the east coast to preach Christianity here at the invitation of Sigbert, king of the East Saxons. The Chapel is reached along a Roman Road.
