This 1920's photograph reminds us of the extent to which goods were loaded and unloaded by hand before the development of modern container systems. Along the railway-track on the right-hand side of the dock can be seen the bases of huge cranes which were part of the original dock installations and were illustrated in a brochure produced for the opening of the dock in 1886.
