The Bata shoe company was founded by Thomas Bata of Zlin in Czechoslovakia, who died in 1932 shortly before this, his first British factory, was completed. His paternalistic style of management was, however, continued by his successors who developed a near self sufficient community with its own farm, and with housing, shops, a restaurant, social centre, and cinema, provided on the site by the company.
