This is believed to be a final record photograph of this prominent landmark taken just before its demolition about 1920. The small lighthouse at the summit of Beacon Hill has an interesting history, having been erected, together with an adjoining house, in 1829 by The Corporation of Trinity House, in order to conduct experiments with different types of lamps, oils and reflectors. It appears as a new building in an engraving of 1832 and continued in occasional use for experiments until about 1870.
