The Burlington Arcade is a covered shopping arcade linking Bond Street, Piccadilly to Burlington Gardens. The Arcade opened in 1819 an early example of a covered arcade and forerunner of the mid-19th century European shopping galleries and the modern shopping centre. The single straight walkway was small two storey units. It was built was built to sell jewellery and fancy/fashionable items. It has always been an upmarket retail location and is patrolled by Arcade Beadles in traditional uniforms including top hats and tailcoats.
