Gorse has green stems and leaves modified to form spines. It has bright yellow flowers and prefers light lime-free soils. Thoroughly crushed, it used to be used as winter cattle feed and as a fuel. It can grow up to eight feet high in thick patches in rough grassy places. It can flower any time of the year but it flowers best April - June. Taken 9th February 2008
