Colchester castle is the largest Norman keep in Europe and has the largest spiral staircase. The staircase spirals to the right so that those defending the castle had space to swing their swords, while those attacking would be forced onto the narrow part of the step, their swords hitting on the central columm. Colchester Castle was Royal Castle. When a King visited, this staircase would have been hung with banners.
