This type of gown or dress was characteristic of the period from 1740s-1770's. Wide pleats flow from the shoulders into a train at the back, allowing maximum display of the expensive fabric. The gown is open at the from to show off a petticoat of the same material. The material is Silk chine velvet from France and the gown British made. The dress can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
