The late 19th century saw artistic women's dress being based on classical, medieval and Renaissance clothing. Liberty's store opened in 1884 selling Aesthetic clothing (including this robe) under the direction of designer E.W.Godwin. The robe is of silk and cotton brocade, silk front panel, silk-plush edging and taffeta lining. The robe can be seen at the Victorian and Albert Museum, London.
