Peg Woffington was a popular actress. In the picture she is wearing lace from Flanders in a Rococo design. The oil on canvas painting may have been by Frenchman Jean-Baptiste van Loo, who came to London in 1737. The painting is contained in a Rococo frame of a slightly later date.
