The statue was commissioned to be placed at the heart of Spring Gardens at Vauxhall. The composer is shown holding the lyre of Orpheus, whose music calmed savaged beasts. The statue became so celebrated that is was used to advertise the gardens. It is in marble and was carved in London by Louis-Francois Roubilac. The plinth was made later in 1850.
