The estate was mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, but changed hands many times. It was Sir Herbert Leon, a Liberal MP, who developed it into the existing mansion starting in 1882. It then became the wartime headquarters of the Government Code and Cypher School in 1938.
Around 12000 personnel worked at Bletchley Park and 9000 of them were women.
