The Tower of London, seen from across the Thames (photographed in the 1960s). The original fortress was built by William the Conqueror in 1068. During its career it has functioned as a fortress, a royal palace, a prison, an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, the Royal Mint, a public records office, an observatory, and since 1303 has been the home of the Crown Jewels.
