Standing at the mouth of the Seiont river, Caernarfon Castle is the most famous of Wales's castles. Its sheer scale sets it apart from the rest. It was built by the English King, Edward I.
Begun in 1283 as part of his conquest of Wales, Caernarfon was built as a military stronghold as well as a seat of government and royal palace.
