Elm bark beetles are carriers of Dutch Elm disease, a fungal infection that damages or kills various types of elm trees. The beetles lay their eggs under the bark of dying elm trees, where the fungus infects the larvae so that when the adult beetles emerge they are already infected with spores, with which they infest healthy trees when they feed on them.
