Exmoor ponies are reputed to be one of the oldest breeds of native ponies. It is also a rare breed, currently listed as "endangered" on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust list (as of 2008) - there are less than 1000 worldwide. Exmoor ponies are brown, bay or dun with black points and are distinguished by their characteristic mealy-coloured markings around the muzzle, eyes and flanks.
