Like all sponges, the Breadcrumb Sponge (Halichondria panicea) is a multicellular colony of animals. The Breadcrumb Sponge is easily identifiable by its volcano-like mounds. It can be green, pale yellow or orange in colour. (Here, the orange colour may indicate the presence of Orange Encrusting Sponge (Hymeniacidon perleve), which often grows alongside Breadcrumb Sponge but has a rough, puckered surface rather than 'volcanos'.)
