Sheep were one of the first type of animals to be "domesticated" - that is, used as farm animals. This first happened in the Middle East, about 7000 BC. Sheep came to this country with the first farmers, about 2000 years later. At this date sheep were not the fat, woolly animals we know today - modern sheep did not make their appearance until the 18th century.
