The Rowan was sacred to the Druids. It was seen as a very magical tree used for wands, rods, amulets and spells. Ill health was sometimes thought to be caused by a curse or spell. Rowan was an aid and protection against enchantment. Sticks of the Rowan were used to carve Runes on. Rowan spays and crosses were placed over cattle and homes for protection. The berries are very bitter and can cause very painful stomach ache or diarrhoea if eaten raw. However cooking destroys the astringent materials and it is possible to make jam with them. The fruits have a tiny pentagram on them. The pentagram is the ancient symbol of protection.
