Woad is an astringent plant. It dries the skin and helps blood coagulate. Hence it was thought that this is why warriors painted themselves with woad. However it is now thought that that was not the case as it is difficult to paint on the body and causes scarring. However it may have been used on wounds that were really bad and would not heal.
