There is some disagreement about when green peas were introduced to Britain. Some say there is no record before the Normans introduced them, others that there are Viking recipes using peas in Denmark and it is likely they were eaten by the Saxons and Vikings in Britain but not recorded as so little was written down about everyday life and the food they ate. The sweet garden pea, as we know it today was established much later.
