A section of Hadrian's wall, built in AD 122/123. It covered the 70 miles distance between the modern-day towns of Newcastle and Carlisle. It was manned by auxiliary cohorts - units of non-citizens drawn from all over the empire. It's purpose was to protect the province from attack from the northern Picts; but it was also probably to control the frontier traffic, both for security purposes and also to ensure customs dues were paid.
