Christian IV wanted a suitable residence in Copenhagen so in 1605 he ordered work to start on a palace just outside the city walls. It was 1624 before Christian declared himself content with the outcome. It has a moat and a drawbridge and is surrounded by a rose garden. No monarch ever resided permanently at Rosenborg. It became the 'royal family's store room'.
