The siege of Ladysmith lasted from 2nd November 1899 to 27th February 1900. During this time the population of the town were kept under constant siege and a huge amount of damage was done to the town from weapons such as Long Tom (the famous Boer cannon). By New Year 1900 food was running short, and the population was reduced to eating their horses. Different rations were apportioned according to which ethnic group one belonged to. In spite of the severe hunger, one of the besieged decided to save this part of a ration biscuit for posterity
