The area around Lulworth is made up of five types of sedimentary rocks. Originally most of the rocks were laid down flat with layers forming one on top of another. Today they are no longer positioned this way They now lie with the oldest rock, - Portland stone on the outside and the youngest – the chalk furthest inland. Millions of years ago the content of Africa was on the move – edging its way towards Europe. When the continents collided the effects were far reaching causing changes in the rock formations many hundreds of miles away. The collision of the earth’s tectonic plates left visible waves in the rock.
