This plant has the biggest leaves of any British water plant, measuring as much as 40cm across. The flowers are only 5 - 7.5 cms. Leaves and flowers develop from submerges stems rooted on the bottom of the pond. It has crimped cup shaped under water leaves as well as the surface leaves. Its seed capsules look like minature bottles and stay afloat for a while due to air bubbles in the tissue, this allows water birds to move it to a new floating site before it submerges and takes root in the mud.
