This plant grows in shade in rich soil, in woods etc. It has small white flowers with deeply notched petals, spaced out along the stem. It has a hairy stem and the leaf stalks have a channel along the top edge. The leaves are held in opposite pairs. In Anglo-Saxon times it was thought to protect against spells by Elves. Picture taken 7th July 2006 at Felmersham, Bedfordshire.
