This plant has whorls of tiny white or pink flowers set apart up the stem at the base of the leaves. The bottom petals of the flowers are spotted with purple. Its short-stalked lobed leaves are held in pairs along a four-sided stem. This plant produces a strong black dye that was used to colour wool and silk. It was also occasionally used as a sedative. Picture taken as Bromham, Bedfordshire on 28th July 2006.
