“In February, part time schools started morning school for the over 11’s only. No one seemed to care if we missed a day or were late. My diary for 1940 [see photograph] tells me that I often stayed away ‘with a headache or felt sick.’ Later I regretted losing all this schooling, however, my diary shows another reason for missing lessons – the teachers often didn’t turn up for school!”
