Reg:

“On the 27th September 1940 our family moved to Hatfield. This photograph was taken in 1956 but Old Hatfield looked very much the same then as it did in 1940. We moved in to number 6. Chapmans Terrace (the row of houses on the middle right – number 6 just out of picture). This house was much smaller than our London house. It had no electricity but it had gas lamps and a flush lavatory, but outside the back door. [This was] not as nice as our London home but we were glad to get pout of London.

A week later after we had arrived in ‘safe’ Hatfield [because] the De Havilland factory was [being targeted]. Fortunately this was the only time De Havilland was bombed.”
