Air raid wardens were very important people during the Second World War. They helped to ensure that you were safely undercover if a German bombing raid was about to happen.
They also patrolled the streets to make sure that there was no light visible from your house (This was called the blackout) that could attract German bombers to target a civilian area. In addition to this street lighting was turned off during the war which further hindered German navigators and bombers.
