The French Emperor, Napoleon, commissioned the Arc de Triomphe in 1806.
His troops never marched through the arch as the Duke of Wellington defeated him at Waterloo in 1815. The Arc de Triomphe was finally completed in 1836, 15 years after Napoleon's death.
France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier faces down the Champs-Élysées. An eternal flame burns. This was the first such memorial, established together with Britain's in Westminster Abbey on November 11, 1920, following World War I.
