This was essentially a Tudor building with mediaeval origins and eighteenth century alterations. Belhus was the home of the Barrett and Barrett-Lennard families from the fourteenth century until the house was sold to The Thames Land Company in 1922. Occupation by the army between 1939 and 1945 resulted in damage which was one of several factors leading to the demolition of the house in 1956. The grounds, which were landscaped by Capability Brown in the eighteenth century, survive as a public park and golf course.
