Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square (photographed in the 1960s). Built in the early 1840s, the square was created to commemorate Nelson's victory, and death, at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The monument was designed by William Railton. The fountains in the Square were designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and the bronze lions were sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer.
