Two marriage records from September and October 1914. In the first document Thomas Taylor, a sergeant in the 12th Lancers, and the son of a brewer, from Dublin, is marrying the daughter of his superior officer, a sergeant-major in the 12th Lancers. She is known as a spinster, the word used then for a woman who was not married. In entry 120, two local people, a widow and widower are being married. Their fathers’ jobs are shown, and this information is considered important, even though the people being married are nearly 50 years old. Why do you think this was?

What inferences can be made from the information in this document about society in 1914? What was happening at that time?
