This map is strangely empty. In 1622 there were far more towns than this in Essex. Is it more of a story map, linking places to important ideas shown as people? It seems to be almost a mythological map, with the towns shown as having spirits rising up from them.

Towns did disappear, for many reasons – agricultural practices changed throwing people out of work, coastlines changed flooding the land, or plagues killed large numbers of people. Other towns grew quickly, because of new opportunities for work and housing. 400 years ago it was easier to travel by boat than by road, and towns were often built where bridges crossed rivers and people could get goods on and off boats.

What can we infer from this map? Why have some of the women got small towns on their heads? What does it tell us about where people went and how they moved around and what they thought about the places?
