The Portland and Purbeck stone outer rocks at the bay mouth provide considerable protection to the cove. This picture was taken in fairly rough weather and the swell of the sea outside the cove area is in marked contrast to the calmer waters inside the cove.

The cove shows the features of a bay. At high water, especially in rough weather, the sea reaches the foot of the cliffs at the sides of the cove, subjecting them to wave erosion. Picture 1 of 2.

The waves rarely reaches the foot of the cliffs at the north end of the bay. This only happens in major storms. As the Portland and Purbeck outer barrier is eroded away erosion will increase in the long term future opening up the cove. Picture 2 of 2.

St. Oswald's Bay is the remains of a former cove, similar to Lulworth Cove but smaller, which has been opened up by the sea. At Lulworth as more of the Portland stone is breached and eventually eroded away the sea will have greater access to the softer rocks behind and the cove will eventually link...
