Durdle Door is an example of a natural archway, initially a cave is formed but with continual wave action, the sea eroded right through to the softer sand and clays behind creating a characteristic archway.

From the seaward side, as seen here, the outer wall is of vertical, Jurassic, Portland Stone (marine Oolite). This more resistant rock forms buttresses against the southwesterly storm waves.

The near verticle Purbeck limestone has softer wealden clay and sand beds on its landward side. These rocks have been eroded away to form bays on either side of durdle door eventually the remaining wealden rocks will be eroded away leaving durdle door seperated from the land.
