Collared Urns
Collared urns. Left urn was placed over cremated remains and buried upside down in a barrow at Jupes Jill near Dedham. Right Urn contained creamted bones and was found at the same location dated 2,250 to 1,500 BC. Picture taken Colchester Castle Museum June 2007.

The Dagenham Idol
Dating from around 2500BC this is the second oldest human depiction found in this country. It was found in a marsh area near the Thames in Dagenham. The wood is pine. Picture taken Colchester Castle Museum June 2007.

Around 2500BC people discovered how to make metal tools and weapons, at first using copper, then later bronze (a mixture of copper and tin). People at this time were farming animals and crops and making pottery. Some of these pots were buried with the dead and are known as 'Beaker burials'
